Perched on the seven hills of the Eastern Ghats in Andhra Pradesh, the Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple at Tirumala is one of the most visited and revered pilgrimage sites on earth. For Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Overseas Citizens of India (OCI), and foreign nationals of Hindu faith, TTD (Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams) offers a dedicated darshan facility that avoids the very long general queues. This guide walks you through everything you need to know before you arrive: the special NRI/foreigner entry, ticket price, entry points, dress code, and the rules you must follow.
Table of Contents
Who Can Use the NRI / Foreigner Special Darshan
TTD runs a special-entry darshan channel specifically for overseas devotees. You are eligible if you fall into any of these categories:
- Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) holding an Indian passport with a valid foreign visa, work permit, or permanent-resident visa.
- OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) cardholders, who must carry both the OCI card and a valid passport.
- Foreign nationals of Indian origin (PIO) / Indian-origin persons with foreign passports.
- Foreign passport holders — NRIs of all countries are permitted to use this facility.
- Srivari Seva (Voluntary Service) at Tirumala — Complete Guide
Two important eligibility conditions:
- The 30-day rule. Your arrival in India must be within the last 30 days of the darshan date. TTD staff physically check the latest immigration entry stamp in your passport. If your stamp is older than 30 days, you will not be allowed through this special channel and must join the regular queue instead.
- Only the eligible devotee is admitted through this channel. Friends, relatives, or family members travelling with you cannot accompany you unless they too produce a valid passport and visa. An Indian-resident spouse or relative will be directed to the general queue.
Children below 12 years of age enter free and do not need a ticket, but must be accompanied by a parent. Carry age proof (passport, birth certificate, or Aadhaar) as staff occasionally verify.
Ticket Price
The NRI / foreigner special-entry darshan ticket costs ₹300 per person (roughly US $3.50, though the rupee amount is what you pay). This is the same price as the domestic Special Entry Darshan, and it includes access to the privileged/special-entry queue line.
Key points on payment and booking:
- This facility cannot be booked online. Unlike the ₹300 online Special Entry Darshan for Indian nationals, the NRI passport-verified darshan is a walk-in, on-arrival service. You purchase the ticket at the counter at Tirumala only, after your documents are verified.
- The ₹300 is paid at the counter after verification — you cannot pre-pay or reserve a slot.
- Tickets are issued only at Tirumala, not at Tirupati town counters or other TTD centres.
If you would prefer to book something online in advance, note that NRIs are also free to book the standard ₹300 Special Entry Darshan slots on the official portal (ttdevasthanams.ap.gov.in) using a passport as ID — but those sell out fast (often within minutes of the quota release, which happens roughly 3 months ahead). The on-arrival passport channel exists precisely so you don't have to depend on that.

Entry Point & Procedure
The dedicated entry for overseas devotees is at the Special Entry Darshan (SED) Hall / Supadham entrance, part of Vaikuntam Queue Complex-1 (VQC-1) at Tirumala. The Supadham entrance sits roughly 100–200 feet from the main Vaikuntam Queue Complex.
Reporting timings: The NRI/foreigner channel operates daily from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Plan to report within this window.
Step-by-step procedure:
- Report to the Supadham / SED entrance at VQC-1 with your original documents.
- Collect and fill in the registration form with your personal, passport, and visa details.
- Submit the completed form along with your original passport (and OCI card, if applicable) plus a photocopy of the passport. TTD staff verify the documents and check that your immigration entry stamp is within 30 days.
- On approval, proceed to the payment counter and pay ₹300 per person.
- Join the special-entry queue line for darshan.
How long it takes: Because you enter through the privileged/special-entry line (shared with senior citizens, physically challenged devotees, and infants), waiting time is significantly shorter than the free Sarva Darshan queue. Expect the whole darshan to take roughly 2.5 to 4.5 hours from joining the queue. You are taken up to the Jaya-Vijaya statues, approximately 30–35 feet from the Moola Virat (the main idol) of Lord Venkateswara.
Documents checklist:
- Original passport (mandatory)
- Valid visa / work permit / PR document
- OCI card (if you are an OCI holder)
- Passport photocopy
- Any additional government photo ID (recommended)
- Age proof for children under 12
Dress Code
The dress code is strictly enforced at the entry points, and devotees who do not comply may be refused darshan. The code reflects traditional Hindu temple custom, emphasising modesty. This applies to everyone, including foreign visitors and children over about 10 years.
For men:
- Traditional Indian attire — dhoti with an upper cloth (angavastram), or a pyjama/kurta.
- Alternatively, full-length trousers with a shirt (full-sleeve preferred).
For women:
- Saree, half-saree with blouse, or churidar / salwar kameez with a dupatta.
Not permitted (for anyone):
- Shorts, bermudas, three-fourths / capris
- Mini-skirts, sleeveless tops, revealing clothing
- Jeans (for women in particular; plain full-length jeans for men are tolerated but traditional wear is strongly preferred)
- Graphic / slogan T-shirts and casual Western wear
If you arrive without suitable clothing, several shops near the temple sell or rent traditional attire, and TTD itself offers clothing assistance on the premises. It is far easier to dress correctly before you arrive than to scramble at the gate.
Guidelines & Rules to Follow
Beyond dress, TTD enforces a set of temple rules to preserve the sanctity of the shrine. Please observe all of the following:
Religious note. The inner sanctum is a Hindu place of worship. Non-Hindus wishing to enter are traditionally asked to sign a declaration of faith in the temple's presiding deity; foreign nationals of Hindu faith are welcome through the special darshan.
Prohibited items (deposit these at the free cloakroom / designated storage counters before joining the queue):
- Mobile phones, cameras, and electronic devices
- Bags and luggage
- All leather items — belts, wallets, purses, footwear (leather is considered impure in the sanctum)
- Food items and any products made from animals
Photography and videography are strictly prohibited throughout the temple complex.
Footwear must be removed before entering the temple premises — carry socks, as the stone floor can get very hot.
Conduct inside:
- Maintain silence and decorum in the queue; do not cut lines or push.
- Avoid unnecessary physical contact with others.
- Follow the instructions of security personnel promptly and undergo the security check.
- Show respect to priests and elders.
Strictly banned in and around the temple: non-vegetarian food, alcohol, smoking, and chewing tobacco.
General etiquette: don't litter (use the dustbins provided), accept prasadam (offering) with reverence, and keep a peaceful, respectful demeanour throughout.
Accommodation for NRIs & Foreigners
There is no special room quota for NRIs — you book accommodation under the general quota like all other pilgrims, either via the official TTD portal (ttdevasthanams.ap.gov.in) or through the offline counters. Because Tirumala lodging fills up quickly, a common and practical strategy is to stay in Tirupati town (which has abundant hotels) and travel up to Tirumala for darshan.
Practical Tips for a Smooth Visit
- Book only from the official site. The only official TTD booking portal is ttdevasthanams.ap.gov.in. Beware of fake booking websites and unofficial "VIP darshan" touts.
- Arrive within the 12 PM–6 PM window for the NRI channel, and allow a buffer — verification plus queue can run several hours.
- Keep your passport handy and your immigration stamp within 30 days — this single condition is the most common reason overseas devotees get turned away from the special channel.
- Travel light. Since phones, bags, and leather all have to be deposited, carry as little as possible to the temple.
- Stay hydrated and eat a light vegetarian meal beforehand — queues involve standing and walking for hours.
- Weighing offerings (Tulabharam / coins), sevas, and prasadam are available; NRIs can also participate in Arjitha Sevas subject to separate booking and availability.
- Best time to visit for shorter waits is a weekday morning during non-festival months. Avoid Pournami (full moon), Amavasya (new moon), the September–October Brahmotsavam period, and school-holiday weekends, when crowds peak.
