Of all the arjitha sevas performed at the temple of Lord Sri Venkateswara Swamy, Sahasra Deepalankarana Seva is the one most pilgrims fall in love with the moment they see it — the Lord rocked gently in a golden swing while a thousand oil lamps glow against the darkening evening sky. Uniquely, it is the only daily seva performed outside the main temple, which means even devotees who don't win the coveted Suprabhatam ticket have a genuine chance to witness the deity up close.

This guide covers everything you need for 2026: the ticket cost, how to book online and through the Electronic Dip, reporting time and place, dress code, and the darshan that follows the seva.

What is Sahasra Deepalankarana Seva?

"Sahasra Deepalankarana" translates literally to "decoration with a thousand lamps." Every evening, the utsava deity Sri Malayappa Swami, along with His consorts Sridevi and Bhudevi, is brought out in procession to the Unjal Mantapam (swing pavilion) located at the south-eastern corner of the Srivari temple.

There, the divine couple is seated in an ornate unjal (swing) in the midst of one thousand lit wick lamps. As the lamps flicker to life at dusk, priests and vidwans sing Annamacharya sankirtanas and Vedic hymns to the newly-wed God and Goddesses. On many days, a devotional group dance — often a troupe from Karnataka, though not restricted to any region — is also performed before the Lord.

As a more recent tradition, after the seva concludes, the Lord and His consorts are taken on a procession along the four Mada streets surrounding the temple before returning inside the temple complex. For many devotees, this dusk procession on the Mada streets, framed by a thousand lamps, is the single most beautiful and spiritually charged moment of the entire Tirumala pilgrimage.

Ticket Cost

The Sahasra Deepalankarana Seva ticket is priced at ₹200 per person.

A few important points on the cost and eligibility:

  • One person is allowed per ticket — the ticket is not transferable and the name cannot be changed after booking, so book carefully with correct name and gender details.
  • Children below 12 years do not require a ticket and are permitted free of charge.
  • The seva ticket includes the darshan of the main deity (Moolavirat) afterwards — you do not need to purchase a separate ₹300 darshan ticket.
  • Two laddu prasadams per person are given to seva ticket holders.
  • Booking is generally limited to 2 tickets per registered user / Aadhaar login in 2026, a measure introduced to prevent hoarding by agents.

Physical Seva vs Virtual Seva — Know the Difference

This is the point that confuses most pilgrims in 2026, so read it carefully. TTD now issues these tickets in two distinct forms, and they are not the same experience:

Physical (Arjitha) Seva — You physically attend the ceremony at the Unjal Mantapam, sit in the presence of the Lord during the lamp ceremony, and are then led directly for darshan through Supadham. This is the "real" seva experience most people want.

Virtual Seva — You book the seva from home and receive the spiritual merit of the seva; your name may be read out during the ritual, but you do not sit in front of the Lord during the lamp ceremony. Virtual seva holders take darshan separately through the special-entry (₹300-style) darshan queue within the validity period specified on the ticket.

Before you book, be clear about which type you are selecting, because the on-ground experience is completely different.

How to Book

All genuine bookings are made only through TTD's official channels. Avoid third-party agents and unofficial websites — TTD does not authorise agents for seva bookings.

Official portal: the TTD online seva/darshan booking system (ttdevasthanams / tirupatibalaji.ap.gov.in). You must be a registered and mobile-verified TTD user to book.

There are two routes to obtain a physical Sahasra Deepalankarana Seva ticket:

1. Monthly Advance Release (Arjitha Seva quota) TTD updates its release schedule on the website, typically in the third weekend of each month, with tickets released as part of the monthly Arjitha Seva quota (commonly around the 21st–24th). Advance booking currently runs for a window of several months. In the booking calendar, available dates are highlighted in green — click a green date to see the tickets available for that day.

2. Electronic Dip (Lucky Dip) For those who miss the monthly quota, TTD operates an Electronic Dip — a lottery-style allotment. You apply for your preferred date, and if selected, you receive an SMS confirmation. You must then pay the ₹200 fee within 24 hours of winning, or the allotment lapses.

Savvy pilgrims specifically target Sahasra Deepalankarana Seva through the dip because TTD issues hundreds of tickets for this physical ceremony, giving a considerably higher success rate than Suprabhatam Seva, for which only a few dozen tickets exist.

Booking steps in brief:

  1. Log in to your registered TTD account on the official portal.
  2. Select the Seva booking option.
  3. Choose your month, then a highlighted (green) available date.
  4. Select "Sahasra Deepalankarana Seva" from the list.
  5. Enter accurate details (name, gender, ID) for each attendee — these cannot be changed later.
  6. Complete payment. Carry the original photo ID used at booking on the day of the seva.

Timings

The seva is performed daily from approximately 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM at the Unjal Mantapam. Because it takes place at dusk, the visual effect of the thousand lamps against the fading light is at its most striking — this is deliberately an evening ceremony.

Note on cancellations: the seva is usually held every day, but it may be cancelled on major festival days such as Brahmotsavam, or on days like Ekadasi when the Lord is engaged in other specific rituals. Always reconfirm before finalising your travel around a specific date.

Reporting Time and Place

Devotees should report at least one hour before the seva, gathering at Supadham (the entry point near the temple for seva pilgrims). Arriving by around 4:30–5:00 PM is strongly advised to allow time for security screening, ID verification, and being escorted to the ceremonial area.

For those booking through the dip, the reporting point in 2026 is commonly indicated as the VQC-1 entry near the museum; always follow the exact reporting instructions printed on your specific ticket, as entry points can vary.

Dress code is mandatory and strictly enforced — no exceptions:

  • Men: white pancha/dhoti with kurta or pyjama (traditional attire).
  • Women: saree with blouse, or Punjabi/chudidar with dupatta, or half-saree.

Devotees not in traditional dress are not permitted into the seva.

Darshan After the Seva

One of the biggest advantages of this seva is the darshan that follows. If you hold a physical seva ticket, once the ceremony ends (around 6:30 PM) you are led in a priority line for darshan of the main deity via Supadham — no separate ticket required. This line is often faster than the regular ₹300 special-entry darshan queue.

Realistically, budget 1 to 2 hours for the darshan portion after the seva, depending on the day's crowd. If you booked the virtual seva, remember you enter through the special-entry darshan queue within your ticket's validity window instead.
