Every pilgrim who visits Tirumala has one worry less than at any other pilgrimage centre in India — food. The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) serves free, unlimited, freshly cooked meals to every devotee at the Matrusri Tarigonda Vengamamba Annaprasadam Complex, the main Nitya Annadanam hall on the hill. Over a lakh pilgrims eat here on a normal day, and on festival days like Brahmotsavam and Vaikunta Ekadasi the number crosses three lakh.

This guide covers everything you need before you walk in — timings, what makes the complex special, its exact location, how to reach it from the main temple, and the guidelines every devotee should follow inside.
About the Complex
The Annaprasadam complex is named after Matrusri Tarigonda Vengamamba, the 18th-century poet-saint of Tarigonda village (Chittoor district) and an ardent devotee of Lord Venkateswara. She is remembered for her lifelong service to the Lord, and TTD honours her legacy by naming its largest Annadanam facility after her.
The present building was constructed at a cost of about ₹35 crores and inaugurated on 7 July 2011 by the then President of India, Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil. Key facts:
- Four dining halls across two floors — Halls 1 and 2 on the ground floor, Halls 3 and 4 on the first floor
- Each hall seats about 1,000 devotees at a time
- Around 1,000 staff — cooks, catering supervisors, cleaners and support workers — serve devotees every day
- Fully modernised kitchen with modular cooking ranges, trolleys and dining systems
- Cooking is largely powered by solar energy from TTD's solar kitchen installations
Annaprasadam Timings
The complex serves three meals a day, almost round the clock:
| Meal | Approximate Timings |
|---|---|
| Breakfast | 8:30 AM – 10:30 AM |
| Lunch | 10:30 AM – 3:30/4:00 PM |
| Dinner | 5:00/5:45 PM – 10:30/11:00 PM |
Important notes on timings:
- Lunch begins immediately after breakfast service, so from morning to late night the hall is open with only a short break between lunch and dinner. In practice, you can walk in at almost any time of day and be served.
- On special days — Brahmotsavam, Vaikunta Ekadasi, Vaikunta Dwadasi, Rathasapthami and peak holiday rush — the counters often remain open until midnight.
- Devotees waiting inside the Vaikuntam Queue Complex compartments are served food, milk and beverages separately at regular intervals, so you will not go hungry even during long darshan waits.
Timings are indicative and can shift slightly on festival days. Check with TTD staff or the enquiry counter on the day of your visit.
Tirumala Do's and Don'ts: A Complete Guide for Pilgrims
What Is Special About This Annadanam?
- Completely free and unlimited. No tokens, no registration, no payment. Every pilgrim — regardless of background, language or faith — is served with equal respect. Servers come around with refills, and no one is refused a second helping.
- Food treated as prasadam. Meals are pure sattvic, cooked without onion and garlic, and devotees regard the food here as prasadam of Lord Venkateswara himself.
- One of the largest free kitchens in the world. On a typical day the kitchen uses 14–16 tonnes of rice and 6.5–7.5 tonnes of vegetables. About 4,000 rotis are prepared daily in addition to full meals. Much of the vegetable supply comes as donations from farmers of the region.
- Served on banana leaves. Lunch and dinner are traditionally served on banana leaves; breakfast is served on plates. The typical meal includes rice, sambar, rasam, a vegetable curry, curd and pickle, with items like pongal or upma at breakfast.
- Clean, fast and dignified. With four 1,000-seat halls running in rotation, queues move quickly even during heavy rush. The halls are cleaned between every batch.
Location
The complex is located on the northern mada street (Thiru Mada Street) of the Tirumala temple:
- About 300 metres from the Sri Venkateswara Swamy main temple
- Right next to the Sri Hayagreeva Swamy temple, near the Adi Varaha Swamy temple side
- A 5-minute walk from the main temple exit
You really cannot miss it — after darshan, the natural flow of pilgrims and the TTD signboards (in Telugu, Tamil, Hindi and English) lead you straight to it.
How to Reach
From the main temple (after darshan): Exit the temple and walk along the north mada street towards the Adi Varaha Swamy temple. The Annaprasadam complex is about 300 metres away, on your route.

From the Tirumala bus stand / Central Reception Office (CRO): It is a 10–15 minute walk towards the main temple's northern side. Free TTD buses also circulate within Tirumala; ask for the "Annadanam complex" or "Vengamamba bhavan" stop.
From Tirupati (down the hill): Reach Tirumala first —
- By bus: APSRTC/TTD buses run from Tirupati (Alipiri) to Tirumala every few minutes, round the clock.
- By footpath: Pilgrims climbing via the Alipiri Mettu (3,550 steps) or Srivari Mettu (2,388 steps) footpaths can head to the complex right after reaching the top — a hot meal after the climb is a blessing in itself.
- By own vehicle: Take the ghat road to Tirumala, park at the designated parking areas, and walk or take a free bus to the temple area.

Guidelines to Follow
- Remove footwear before entering the complex — chappals are not allowed inside. Use the stand at the entrance.
- Follow the queue line. Entry is regulated batch by batch; take the seat shown by the volunteers and wait for servers to come to you.
- Take only what you can eat. Refills are freely given, so avoid wasting food — it is prasadam, not just a meal.
- Maintain silence and decorum inside the dining halls. Many devotees recite "Govinda! Govinda!" before beginning the meal.
- Wash hands at the wash areas provided before and after eating.
- No outside food inside the halls; dispose of your leaf/plate only at the designated collection points.
- Elderly pilgrims, differently-abled devotees and mothers with infants can approach the staff for priority assistance.
- If you have allergies or dietary restrictions, ask the serving staff about ingredients before eating.
